Action to Cure Kidney Cancer conducted our annual campaign in March requesting Congress to appropriate $15 million to the Department of Defense's (DoD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs for KIDNEY CANCER RESEARCH. If we succeed, the federal kidney cancer research budget would increase by 50%! Last year, we were able to get kidney cancer listed as one of 25 diseases eligible for grants under DoD's $50 million Peer Reviewed Medical Research Programs. This is an excellent start, but not nearly enough. We need DoD to target money directly for KIDNEY CANCER RESEARCH the same way as it targets funds to research breast, prostate, leukemia, and ovarian cancers.
20 Senators signed the Senate Dear Colleague letter and 32 Representatives signed the House Dear Colleague letter asking for the $15 million appropriation. Click below to see the signed Senate and House letters. To find out if the money will be appropriated, we have to wait for the Defense bill to be marked up by the respective Defense Senate and House sub-committees, which didn't occur until September for last year's bill.
